In effect, the zinc is sacrificed to save the iron. In addition, the compound that forms when zinc and oxygen react serves as a protective barrier for the iron underneath. Here is a simple experiment using galvanized nails to prove that zinc is a more active metal than iron. You will collect one of the products made when a metal reacts with an acid. Place several galvanized nails in an empty plastic pill container. Pour vinegar into the container until it is three-quarters full. Place the cap on the container and invert it.

The diluted muriatic acid is the solution of unknown concentration. Fill a plastic bottle with the diluted muriatic acid solution and record its mass when filled. Clean and dry the glass jar. Pour about one third of the acid solution in the plastic bottle into the glass jar. Add 3 drops of the phenolphthalein indicator to the acid. Earlier in the chapter, you learned that an indicator changes color depending on whether the solution is an acid or a base. Phenolphthalein is colorless in an acidic solution.

An alloy is a mixture of two or more metals. Nonmetals can also be added to an alloy. 2 percent carbon, which is a nonmetal. That small percentage of carbon gives the alloy the properties needed so that nails can be hammered. Tools such as hammers and screwdrivers are made from high-carbon steel. 5 percent carbon. The higher the carbon content, the tougher and harder the metal. Image Credit: Stephen F. Delisle FIGURE 1: You should hear a small pop when you hold the empty pill container over the flame.
