After a while we might move to another bloke’s house, then we might go back to Tanya’s and eventually we’d land back at home again. I just did as I was told. If Mum said, ‘Come on, pack your bag, we’re leaving’, I packed my bag and left with her. She didn’t always take me with her though. One time, during a brief period when Mum and Dad were back together, we were staying with their friends Myra and Harry as our house had been broken into. They were really nice people and had a girl and a boy, Katie and Simon, so we used to play together.
What a sweet thing you are! ’ I didn’t think much of it at the time; he was just another man. And there had already been so many men in Mum’s life. But if I’d known the destruction and terror Charlie would bring to my world, I would have turned and jumped back on that train, however big the gap. Life at home had always been difficult and chaotic with Mum. I found out much later on that she’d suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, but as a kid all I knew was there were two sides to her. There was the lovely, bubbly woman who could make everyone smile and laugh, and then there was the horrible woman who hit me, shouted at me and said hateful, hurtful things.
By now she’d put on a lot of weight and she didn’t dress nicely. She was fat with short black hair and wore bright red lipstick, which didn’t make her look sexy, as she thought, just strange. If you saw her in the street, she wouldn’t be the kind of person you’d be proud to call your mum. But I was proud to call Charlie my dad and I was happy in my new home. Unfortunately, we didn’t stay there long – I didn’t know this at the time but Mum hadn’t kept in touch with my real dad. In fact, she’d been hiding from him.
