After all, it’s really his project, not mine. On a September day in 1913, Father James gave a talk at one of the shrines in the city. The talk was about devotion to Mary. Bishop Re was present, and he came up to the young priest afterward. “That was beautiful, Father James,” said the bishop. ” Father James replied. ” “Yes. It involves you. ” Father James nodded. The Association of the Good Press was a group that wanted to make God better known by means of pamphlets, leaflets, and anything else that they could have printed.

He had studied there for a year, until the staff had sent him home because of his stutter. In the seminary parlor, Father James told him, “Wait here for Tor Armani (ahr-MAH-nee). He’ll be coming soon. I don’t think you’ve ever met him. ” A few minutes later, Des met Tor, who looked just a little older than himself. ” Tor asked. “Well, yes, b-b-but I’m staying l-l-longer than that,” Des replied. ” “No, tell me,” said Tor with interest. Des told him the little he knew. ” Father James came back and greeted Tor.

Father James began learning about some of the religious orders and congregations in the Church. He wanted to know how the members of each of them lived and prayed. He thought about the boys he had met in the parishes and invited to the seminary. By now, there were others besides Joseph and Francis. Maybe some of these boys will join my congregation, he thought. Now that his idea was clearer, he talked about it with Bishop Re. ” “You’re giving very much to the diocese every day,” the bishop replied.
