The Stocks were trapped, the sanctity of their master bedroom violated. Wayne Stock owned an assortment of hunting rifles and shotguns, but his weapons cache was locked away in his gun cabinet in his office across the hall. As Wayne tried to escape the bedroom, one of the armed intruders fired a second shotgun blast, striking his left knee and shattering his leg.

His uncle Wayne also served on the Elmwood-Murdock school board, a largely rural K-12 district of about four hundred students. While in school, Matt often became the target of ridicule and teasing. Other students didn’t understand his varying degrees of learning disabilities. He stuck out and had very few friends. At family gatherings, Matt did not really hang around and socialize with his more successful cousins, such as Wayne’s sons, Andy and Steven, or their sister Tammy.
