This chapter examines Freud's early work with catharsis and hypnosis and Freud's reason for rejecting both these techniques. Charcot and Hysteria Freud received a medical degree in 1881 and began his career as a research scientist studying microscopic anatomy of the brain. He decided he could advance faster as a practicing physician, but because medical students were taught by lecture and demonstration only, he had no experience with the care of patients.
