Bonzai Bob” spent his final days writing letters to the governor and other state officials, always using a swastika to dot the i in his nickname. In one letter, Vickers asked if his last meal could be prepared by a woman. He also requested permission to wear a 3-piece suit to his execution. “I wanna die dressed,” he wrote. “Gonna be some ladies there. ” Both requests were denied, but Vickers did receive his chosen last meal—green chili burros, burritos with barbecued steak, French fries, vanilla ice cream, cream soda, and a cigarette.
But when a white couple in their fifties came out of the store, they seemed perfect. Colwell shot both in the head, killing the husband first. He then drove to the local police station and calmly turned himself in. Any murder is terrible, but to kill two people because you yourself want to die—and to do it in such a complicated and pointless fashion—well, it’s like using a pair of hedge clippers to cut a coupon out of the newspaper, or brushing your hair one strand at a time, or kidnapping an entire high school wrestling team because you need help opening a jar of pickles, or—well, you get the point.
It wasn’t long before Newton got his wish. After an argument over a game of chess, the big convict flew into a violent rage. “He kept giving up,” Newton later explained. “Every time I put him in check, he’d give up and want to start a new game. And I tried to tell him you never give up. You never know when your opponent is going to make a mistake, so you play it out until you can’t play it out any more. ” In a rather drastic version of “checkmate,” Newton punched, kicked, and stomped Brewer, then slammed the other man’s head against the floor.
