The expansion of digital publishing of literature has created new demanding situations, reminiscent of the necessity for mechanisms for mentioning on-line references in ways in which can guarantee discoverability and retrieval for a few years into the longer term. the expansion in on-line datasets offers similar, but extra complicated demanding situations. It depends on the facility to reliably determine, find, entry, interpret, and ascertain the model, integrity, and provenance of electronic datasets. info quotation criteria and solid practices can shape the root for elevated incentives, reputation, and rewards for medical facts actions that during many instances are presently missing in lots of fields of analysis. The workshop summarized in For Attribution -- constructing facts Attribution and quotation Practices and criteria: precis of a global Workshop was equipped by way of a steerage committee lower than the nationwide examine Council's (NRC's) Board on examine information and knowledge, in collaboration with a global CODATA-ICSTI activity staff on facts quotation criteria and Practices. the aim of the symposium used to be to check a few key concerns with regards to info identity, attribution, quotation, and linking to assist coordinate actions during this region across the world, and to advertise universal practices and criteria within the clinical group.

For example, for any dataset, there can be several URIs involved, including URIs for the splash pages (one for human and one for machine agents) and URIs for multiple components of the dataset. Maybe there are different formats of the same data available, in which case there are even more URIs and the need to express a format relationship. We have to distinguish between all those URIs and make sure that it is clear to the machine what each URI stands for. We need technical metadata about the data so that the machine can automatically interact with the data, process it.

What is amazing is that between 1986 and 2007, everything having to do with vinyl (analog) has disappeared and everything that is now digital becomes completely dominated by PCs. Most of the data we have now are on people's PCs. The growth has been quite constant. So, for any conclusion that you draw from a study from 1986 to 2007, you probably have to scale those estimates upward considerably, in order to assess the situation today accurately. org/PGA/brdi/PGA_064019. “The Importance of Long-term Preservation and Accessibility of Geophysical Data” AGU, May 2009.
