Sometimes the loudest person in the room is trying to hide their feelings of low self-worth with a mask of apparent super-confidence that they present to the world. As a general rule, someone with low self-esteem will avoid eye contact. There’s an old saying that people who can’t look you in the eye have something to hide. This is broadly true, but not for the reasons you might think. People with low self-esteem believe that they are unlovable, they have often convinced themselves that there is something fundamentally ‘ugly’ or shameful about them that, if you look them directly in the eye, you will be able to see.
Many successful, wealthy and/or intelligent people who may appear to the outside world to ‘have everything’ battle with this condition. By its very nature, depression is not a logical reaction to the things around the person suffering from it, so it does not matter how many material possessions, friends or loved ones that person might have. Half the people who experience an episode of depression will only go through it once. For the other half, there will be recurring incidences of depression throughout their lives.
According to a study, in an average British classroom in 2011 three students were self-harming. Eating disorders will be experienced by one in ten young people before they reach the age of twenty-five. Suicide is the biggest killer of men and boys under twenty-one in the UK. Ten percent of the British population currently meet the diagnostic criteria for mixed depression and anxiety disorder. I could go on but I won’t because, ironically, to do so would be too depressing. For whilst my work delivering self-esteem classes to teenagers over the past eight years has, sadly, completely borne out the above statistics, it has also taught me to hope.
