Circular spiral inductors are the most area efficient and provide the highest quality. However, it is not available in many CMOS processes because it requires infinite fine angle step. 14 shows an example of a circular inductor. Octagonal inductors have benefits of area efficiency and quality, and compatibility to most CMOS processes. Therefore, they are the most preferred inductors on chip. 15. 13. 14. Circular spiral inductor The substrate is another important factor to the performance of an on-chip spiral inductor.

Because of the mobility degradation the transistors operate under a sub-square law. 12. 13. The loop gain of the positive needs to be carefully controlled so that it is sufficient to cancel the effective mobility feedback resistor but small enough to avoid instability. 5. Cross-coupled differential pairs with harmonic cancellation This section presents a new transconductor with harmonic cancellation. When two differential pairs are cross-coupled with scaled inputs between each other, the signal harmonics can be cancelled at the output.

Such nonlinearity can also be compressed if the output load is also included inside the system before subtraction or cancellation. Though the linearization technique proposed here is very general and can be applied to most of the weakly nonlinear systems, for simplicity only rd order cancellation is discussed for the rest of the chapter. Linearity and power consumption In CMOS design, there is a tradeoff between linearity and power consumption. The transconductance linearity of short-channel MOSFETs has been studied and a theoretical curve of IIP3 versus power consumption has been reported [48].
