Change involves an extremely important component – emotional commitment. So what is leadership? At its most elemental and practical level, ‘leadership is letting people know their own value and potential so that they can identify this for themselves’ (Covey, 2004: 55). The qualities of an effective leader are that they are able to manage themselves well, need to be credible and be a good role model. They should have the skills to commit to a purpose outside themselves and to want to achieve something for the organization. Effective leaders build their competence and focus their efforts for maximum impact, while recognizing their own limitations.

Effective handling of resistance usually involves more than one method. This can be influenced by the personal strengths and limitations of the change agent, such as leadership style, knowledge and skills. There should be a realistic appraisal of the situation and a clear strategy devised. A time span should be set and a speed at which the change must be implemented; patience might be required for long-term goals. 1 Inhibitors to change Successful proactive change is where people or teams choose to change.
