1 Introduction The nature of the microstructure of the interfacial zone has been studied extensively. The structure of the interfacial zone in the vicinity of the inclusion in the paste is often quite different from that of the bulk paste away from the inclusion surface. The development of this special structure is, to a large extent, dependent on the nature of the fresh mix, in particular with respect to the formation of water-filled spaces around the inclusion’s surface (Escadeillas and Maso, 1991).
