Most of photosynthesis occurs within the thylakoid membranes. Sunlight is essential to photosynthesis, and it must be captured by colored pigments. The most common pigment in plant cells in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll pigment gives plants their green color, and it is most common in leaves and portions of the plant that are exposed to sunlight. However, chlorophyll is not the only pigment found in plants. Orange carotene pigments and yellow xanthophylls are also found in plants and help to capture more sunlight.
Ribosomes actually have two parts, or subunits, that assist each other during protein production. In eukaryotic cells, the subunits of ribosomes are referred to as the 60-s subunit and the 40-s subunit. The 60-s subunit is the larger of the two. These parts work in unison to gather information from mRNA and then assemble the amino acids necessary to correctly build the protein. The ribosomes that build these proteins can either be “free” or ﬂoating in the cytoplasm of the cell, or they can be “membrane bound” like those that build proteins on the RER.

The complex relationships between organelles in the cell allow for the production of proteins, the production of food, and the removal of wastes.
