He had never been charged with any crime. He had contacted an attorney, who advised him to work hard and attend the groups in the hope of getting his daughter back someday. He was trying to do this. Casiano’s own parents split up when he was a teen. Casiano and his brother, together with their mother, went to live with their grandmother, who was alone and in failing health. The grandfather had been an alcoholic. His father was serving a prison sentence, and Casiano did not have contact with him for a very long time.

Moving from one foster home to another and then from one parent to another took a toll on his emotional well-being. He felt as if nobody wanted him. And very early in his life, he saw his own brother being abandoned in a bus station, as his mother, with Jake in tow, left the infant for someone else to find. As a result, feelings of abandonment ran deep in Jake’s experience, and this also took a toll on his early experiences of intimacy. He would be the one to abandon others, in order to protect himself from being abandoned.

He was having supervised visits with his daughter. He and the baby’s mother had graduated from the parenting class, and he was still working for the pastor’s home improvement business. Casiano had almost completed his fifty-two weeks of the batterer intervention program. Yet he had no indication that his daughter would ever be returned to them. His attorney encouraged him to keep on trying to fulfill all the expectations of the program. He had an outstanding charge against him of burglary from before the child was born, but it had not yet come to court.
